Free Virtual Tarot Reading – Virtual Tarot Cards

Tarot or ‘Tarrochi’ as it was originally known has been around since at least the 15th century, and there is evidence to suggest that it has been around a lot longer. Made up of a set of cards (usually 78 in number) the Tarot was used as a tool traditionally by occultists and mystics within the practise of divination, the practise of gaining knowledge or insights by means outside of the normal senses.
As with Ouija boards it is not believed that the Tarot cards themselves contain magical abilities, but rather that the tarot cards are used as a focusing tool by the card reader, who through interpretation of the images that adorn the tarot cards, is able to glean information, and offer advice regarding the past, present, and future.
Virtual Tarot Cards
It was inevitable that sooner or later Tarot cards would go digital, and free virtual tarot cards online offer a convenient and cheap way for those seeking advice to gain perspective on life events, the understanding of which can often lead to new directions, and breakthroughs that can help to lay past demons to rest.
In order to play the virtual tarot cards online you must first enter your first name and date of birth, this is to provide the virtual tarot card reader with a small amount of information through which to familiarise itself with you, names and dates of birth have long been used as a point of reference for the prediction of life events via astrology and all manner of metaphysical sciences, and the virtual Tarot cards are no exception.  By referencing your name and date of birth against a comprehensive database of astrological information the Tarot virtual is able to offer, through the dealing of three cards, insights and predictions for your past, present and future.
Perhaps ‘Judgement’ in your past will speak of harboured jealousies, and warn against repeating the same mistakes again, will ‘The wheel of fortune‘card offer encouragement that your attempts to mend broken ties with family is the right thing to do at present, or will ‘The lovers’ card predict romance in your future, if you play your cards right this time.

Psychic Ball – The Use of Crystal Balls and Shew-Stones by Fortune Tellers

The psychic ball, otherwise known as a crystal ball or shew-stone is a tool used as an aid in the practice of clairvoyance, fortune telling or psychic prediction. A psychic ball is usually made of crystal or glass and its use dates back to 2,000 BC when Druids in Britain are known to have used crystals in the practise of divination.
During Europe’s medieval period (between 500-1500 AD) crystal was used as a method of predicting the future by all manner of ‘mystical’ workers, including: seers, wizards, psychics and gypsy fortune tellers, the most commonly used crystal for the practice of divination during this period due to its transparent nature was ‘Beryllium Aluminum Silicate.’
In Scotland these crystals became known as ‘stones of power’, which ultimately evolved in to what we now know today as ‘psychic balls, crystal balls and shew stones.’

Psychic Balls – The Art of Scrying
The practise of using a psychic ball, crystal ball or shew-stone to predict the future is known as ‘scrying’, scrying is the process of analyzing images seen within the crystal and interpreting them in a meaningful way. The images seen within the psychic ball and the information gained from them are used to predict future events or to help make informed decisions regarding current events within the life of those seeking answers. The psychic balls and the fortune tellers that wield their power are often sought out by those wishing to gleam insights regarding issues such as: love, marriage, finance, travel and business.
The art of scrying can also be performed within a body of water contained within a bowl, etc. these are known as ‘scrying pools.’ Scrying with regards to the specific use of crystals or psychic balls as the medium for divination is known as ‘crystallomancy’ or ‘crystal gazing.’
Scrying – How to use a Psychic Ball, Crystal Ball or Shew-Stone.
Prepare your psychic ball; place it somewhere where it is set stable and where you have easy and comfortable access to get up close to it. Lay your hands gently upon the psychic ball and concentrate for a few minutes upon energizing the ball and connecting with it. Now energized start to visualize within the crystal ball your purpose of the scrying session, if you seek answers about a specific person, place, etc. try to visualize that within the balls crystal.
Now you should have established a psychic rapport with the crystal ball, remove your hands and stare deeply into the crystal, relax your eyes and allow them to become slightly out-of-focus. At this point you should visualise a mist growing within your psychic ball, concentrate on this mist and help it to grow until it has filled the entire crystal ball.
If you have now fully established a psychic connection with the psychic ball you have established a gateway through which glimpses of the future may be seen, allow the mist to part revealing images that you will need to interpret in order to understand and predict the best course of actions for the future.

How to Perform an Exorcism - The Exorcist and True Exorcism

"He's a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But, he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen. Remember that, do not listen."

Exorcism is the practise of casting out an evil spirit from a person, a place or an object. Exorcisms are usually carried out by a member of the clergy or by somebody believed to be in possession of special gifts or powers and commonly they are known as an 'Exorcist'.

But finding an Exorcist and then convincing said Exorcist to pop round to perform the sacred rights at your house when things start to go bump in the night can be easier said then done. So it looks like you're on your own again, so how can YOU get rid of a Demon? The exorcism carried out by a holy man is known as a 'Solemn Exorcism'. There is however another type of exorcism known as the 'Simple Exorcism' which can be carried out by a layman, i.e. you.

The power of prayer, that's right and assuming you've seen some pretty strange things during your period of Poltergeist activity then it's time to put two and two together and become a believer real fast. Virtually every recorded case of Demonix activity has reached its conclusion due to religious intervention. The 'simple' exorcism involves asking for help from above by reciting the prayer of Saint Michael.

Saint Michael's Prayer:

"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, thrust into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen".

Interestingly it was Saint Michael who is said to have appeared to the boy known as 'Roland Doe' to banish the demon in the notorious exorcism on which the 'Exorcist' movie was based.

Simple exorcisms can be carried out on people, places and objects and it is said that the most important thing to remember when carrying out a simple exorcism is to remember that you are never to address the demon or poltergeist directly i.e. instead of something like, "I rebuke you demon of anger" we must say, rather, something like, "Father in Heaven, please rebuke this demon of anger." thus avoiding the use of 'I', because you yourself have no power.

How to Become an Exorcist:

'Want to become an 'Exorcist?' - The international Association of Exorcists meets only once every two years in secrecy.  In order to join the association you must be a Roman Catholic priest, and you must also have permission from your bishop.

The organisation was formed in 1993 by 'Father Gabriele Amorth', the official exorcist of Vatican city in the Diocese of Rome.  Father Gabriele Amorth became an exorcist in 1986, and since then has carried out more then 30,000 exorcisms, he started the association in order to increase the number of official exorcist’s world-wide.  It is reported that Father Gabriele Amorth believes that the likes of 'Adolf Hitler' and 'Josef Stalin' may have been influenced by demonic spirits.

The 'Athenaeum Pontificium Regina Apostolorum', a vatican-backed college in Rome now offers courses to Roman Catholic priests - teaching them how to cast out evil spirits from the possessed.  The two-month long course trains the priests in the the 'spiritual, liturgical and pastoral work involved with being an exorcist.'

Pazuzu - Demon from the Exorcist Movies

Pazuzu, King of the Demons, Dark Angel of the four winds, Lord of the South Western winds, the bringer of pestilence and the master of fevers and plagues. Pazuzu is a Demon based in Assyrian and Babylonian mythology and was believed to be a mixture of both man and animal in appearance, with the body of a man, the face of a lion, the taloned feet of an eagle and wings, and a scorpion’s tail.

Pazuzu is often portrayed as having one arm reaching upwards and the other stretching downwards symbolising both life and death, or creation and destruction. Pazuzu was associated with the dry south-western winds that were known to precede famine in dry-seasons and plagues of locusts during the rainy seasons.

Pazuzu's most notorious appearance in recent times was of that as the Demon that possessed the young girl 'Regan MacNeil' in the hit horror movie 'The Exorcist'.

The following is an example of an invocation found engraved in cuneiform characters on a statue of Pazuzu. It is believed to have been used as an amulet to protect people from Pazuzu.

"I am Pazuzu, son of the king of the evil spirits, that one who descends impetuously from the mountains and bring the storms. That is the one I am."

The Saint Benedict Exorcism Medal
The Saint Benedict medal also known as ‘the cross of eternal salvation’ is worn or used in order to call down God’s blessing and protection upon the wearer or user. The Saint Benedict medal is considered to be the physical embodiment of a prayer of exorcism against Satan.

Saint Benedict (c. 480 - c. 547) was the son of a Roman noble of Nursia, a small town near Spoleto. Saint Benedict founded twelve communities for monks, the best known of which is his first monastery at Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy.

The Saint Benedict medal is considered to be a valuable aid with regard to performing an exorcism, and the video below demonstrates a Saint Benedict exorcism prayer that can be used to remove bad spirits and negative entities from your home or life.

The Saint Benedict Exorcism Prayer Translated

CRUX SACRA SIT MIHI LUX: May the Holy Cross be a light unto me,
NON DRACO SIT MIHI DUXAnd may the Dragon never be my guide.

VADE RETRO SATANA; NUNQUAM SUADE MIHI VANAGet behind me, Satan; Never suggest vain thoughts to me.
SUNT MALA QUAE LIBAS: The cup you offer is evil;

Using 'Sage' to Banish Evil Spirits

The herb ‘Sage’ is often promoted as having properties that enable it to assist with the banishing of evil spirits or forces. Sage can be used to protect specific items by storing them with bundles or boughs of Sage, or the herb may be burnt through the practise of ‘Smudging’ in order to rid an area or home of the influences of evil spirits and demons.

The practise of smudging can be carried out using ‘smudge-sticks’, similar to joss-sticks smudge-sticks are purpose made from the herb Sage and may be lit with a candle to create a purifying smoke bath.  Alternatively loose dry herbs may be sprinkled over a burning log or indoor fireplace, etc. to achieve the same effect.

The End of the World is Coming (or is it?) – 2012

2012 - The End of the World?
So you’ve probably heard by now that the world is going to end on the 21st of the 12th, 2012, Nostradamus predicted it and the Mayan calendar that has run for 2,300 years comes to an end.  Geologists predict erratic weather patterns and mega volcanic activity to occur in the year 2012 and hidden Bible codes have been translated to reveal warnings such as: ‘a sign of God from space’ and ‘it will be crumbled I will tear to pieces’ believed to predict the coming of a huge comet that will destroy the Earth.  And it’s all very believable, and no doubt as we speak there are those who are building doomsday shelters and stocking them with tinned goods and water.
2012 - The End of the World?
2012 - The End of the World?

The End of Days

Most who believe in the 2012 Armageddon attribute it to the ‘Rapture’, the Rapture is a prophesied event in Christian eschatology, in which Christians are gathered together to participate in the Second Coming of Christ. Christians who have died are to be resurrected to participate in the coming of Christ along with those who are still living at the time of the event.
Thessalonians 4:15-17 - ‘For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. [17] After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.’
Apparently this is going to be a very bad time to not be a Christian because:
‘After The Rapture, God will begin executing judgments against unbelievers, during a period called the Tribulation.’
Ok, so the first time I heard all this I was getting a little worried, at the time of writing it’s half way through 2009 already, and that doesn’t leave me very long to be getting on with all the things that I had planned to be doing. In fact I hadn’t even planned to start planning the things that I wanted to do with the rest of my life for at least another five years or so.
2012, the end of the world, the Armageddon, the Rapture, the second coming, judgements and tribulations and comets and mega volcanoes, it would be very easy for a person to get pretty upset about all of this. However before we all start going mental, quitting our jobs and swimming with dolphins, committing suicide and raping and pillaging, let’s all take a little look through the book that I like to call ‘History’.
The World Will End in the Year 2001
In July 1997 the ‘International Association of Psychics’ issued a warning that recently over 92% of their 120,000 strong member base had received the same psychic vision predicting the end of days. This mass psyschic prediction had the date of the end of the world pegged as the year 2001. ‘Madame Vredeau’ a spokesperson for the association issued a statement warning that in the year 2001 the world will experience the reappearance of prophets and saints who will lead the faithful to safety, the oceans will shrink, crops will fail, all known laws of nature will be disrupted and Satan and his Demons will appear followed by war, plague and pestilence.
The World Will End in the Year 2000
The year 2000 was a busy year for Doomsday predictions, according to ‘The Sun’ in 1961 the Pope John XXIII predicted the coming of the end of the world starting on January the 1st 2000 starting with the detonation of an atomic bomb in a major European city by a Libyan terrorist group.
Also on the 1st of January 2000 lay the prediction by a ‘William Cooper’ head of a militia group that on this day the secret pyramids of Giza will open releasing Satan to walk amongst us, heralding the coming of the end of days.
A story run in the ‘Weekly World News’ in 1997 told of the CIA having captured an alien that had revealed to them that ‘God is furious with all of his creations everywhere’ and that due to his dislike for all of his creations throughout the universe he is ’systematically working his way across the galaxies, setting fires to the planets and exploding them one by one, and that Earths turn will come on the 11th of January in the year 2000.
In addition if you divide the number 2000 by 3 the holiest of numbers you will find: ‘666.66666666666667’ the number of the beast (well almost).
The World Will End in the Year 1997
Russian scientist ‘Vladimir Sobolyovhas’ having spent a great deal of time analysing prophecies made by Russian saints (including Nostradamus) predicted that the world would end in September of the year 1997, his analysis of these predictions led Vladimir to believe that on this date the Earth would tilt on its axis by 30 degrees submerging the Scandinavian countries and Britain in what he labelled ‘The Armageddon Flood’. Luckily for him however Siberia would be spared by alien intervention, the aliens would come and lead the world into the fourth dimension.
The World will End in the Year 1992
According to the Korean group known as ‘Mission for the coming days’ October 28th 1992 was the date of the end of the world. This date was predicted by the Korean church based on numerology and ghostly images appearing in pictures and was taken very seriously by the churches followers. An estimated 20,000 South Koreans believed they would be lifted into Heaven at the stroke of midnight upon this date and then the end of the world would commence below.
Large numbers of South Koreans sold their homes, quit their jobs and abandoned their families and at least four followers of this Korean church are known to have committed suicide prior to the coming Rapture
Analysts have not offered authoritative explanations as to why the Rapture phenomenon seemed to seize so many in South Korea, a well-educated nation where about 20% of the people are Christians and where religion has long played a major role in the society.
World Record for Doomsday Predictions
Probably the group with the largest number of incorrect Doomsday predictions is the ‘Jehovahs Witnesses’ who have throughout their time predicted that the world will end in: 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975 and most recently in 1984.
The End of Days
There have been at least 220 known predictions for the end of the world dating back to the year 30 CE.
The above are just a few of the hundreds of predicted doomsdays that have been and gone throughout our history, most of which have caused unneeded stress and suffering to those who have believed in them. The end of the world prophecy is possibly just another phenomenon of human existence and our need to attempt to control the environments that surround us. But these recurring Doomsday prophecies are not without their benefits, from time to time they rear up and remind us that life is for the living, compel us to live every day as our last, because despite these many and varied predictions, nobody really knows just what tomorrow holds.

2012: The Solar Alignment Explained - Will The World End?

The Fortune Teller Fish - Know Your Nature

"Welcome, The Fortune Teller Fish Has Been Expecting You!"
You've no doubt seen them and most likely played with them at some point in your life, as gifts within Christmas crackers or given away as children's party favors. 'Fortune Teller Fish', small red plastic fish that twist and curl when placed within the hand and whose shape can then be interpreted to offer insights into a persons nature.
Try as I might I am unable to find any information regarding the history of the fortune teller fish with such facts as 'who invented it?' and 'when?' remaining elusive, adding to the mystery of this festive favorite that is also known as the 'Miracle Fish'.
How to use a Fortune Teller Fish
It's not rocket science, simply place the small red plastic fishy into the palm of your hand and then watch it react. And then finally interpret its form according to the instructions included with your Miracle Fish, for example: Should your Fortune Fish move its head this could signify a jealous nature, whilst a moving tail could symbolize a streak of indifference within you. If both head and tail move together then the Fortune Teller Fish predicts you'll soon fall in love, whilst if the small red plastic fish remains motionless within your palm the instructions simply read 'dead one', and it's difficult to tell whether this is in reference to the small plastic fish itself, or the emotionally devoid state of the person who holds it.
How do Fortune Teller Fish work?

*Spoiler Alert* - Science has a habit of spoiling the magics of youth so should you wish to retain any sense of wonder regarding the Miracle Fish and not ruin future parties for yourself then please skip this bit.
Fortune Teller Fish are made from long-strand polymers of the type commonly used within baby's diapers and are very sensitive to moisture. This material from which these little red plastic fish are made 'grabs' at water molecules and without absorbing them attaches itself forcing the water molecule to change shape. And it is through this forced altering of the water molecules shape to which the polymers are attached that in turn forces the Fortune Fish to change shape also.

So essentially the Miracle Fish remained flat within its packet sealed away as it was from moisture, but when placed upon the hand the Fortune Fish starts attaching itself to any water molecules it can find, and as they accumulate upon its surface it twists and turns under their weight.
The Fortune Teller Fish - Beyond Science

Putting hard science aside for a moment (because Scientists are spoil-sports) the Fortune Teller Fish is actually a very simple form of 'Divination' (should you believe in such things), and in the same way as 'Tarot Card Reading', 'Palm Reading' and 'Scrying' the aim is to make sense out of chaos and make useful predictions from known patterns, which are essentially messages and warnings offered up by spirits, the subconscious, or the Cosmos.
So with Fortune Teller Fish curled up in the palm of my hand indicating 'Passion' I say "Boo Sucks!" to the Scientists, "I'll do my best to forget what you said", because some things are more fun than hard facts, and long may this small red plastic fish amaze, confuse and entertain, all who come into contact with her.

Hungry Ghosts – Buddhism and Thai Folklore

As I understand it ‘Hungry Ghosts’ are a product of Karma, and a punishment dealt through the process of reincarnation for a life lived selfishly and to excess. The crime for becoming a hungry ghost following your death could best be explained as being a combination of the Catholic cardinal sins (Seven Deadly Sins) of ‘Greed’, ‘Lust’ and ‘Gluttony’.
In physical appearance hungry ghosts are depicted as having huge bloated stomachs, and tiny necks or mouths through which it is impossible to ever pass enough food to sate its appetite and quench its hunger.
"Mouths the size of a needle's eye and a stomach the size of a mountain"
Some believe that following death and subsequent transformation those who are turned into hungry ghosts lurk in the shadows of our world, continuing their futile efforts to achieve satisfaction, by feeding on the emotions and actions of the living.
Hungry Ghosts and the Cardinal Sins
The Sanskrit word for a hungry ghost is ‘Petra’ which means ‘departed one’ and as mentioned above transformation following death into a hungry ghost is associated with the crimes of greed, lust and gluttony.
‘Gluttony’ is described as the cardinal sin of over-indulgence, or over consumption of anything to the point of waste and is usually associated with an excessive desire for food. ‘Greed’ is similar to gluttony but is usually associated more with the pursuit of wealth, status or power, and in particular to the gaining of material wealth through the practises of violence, trickery or manipulation. ‘Lust’ like greed and gluttony is another sin of excess, and is associated with the unrestrained desire for sexual pleasures.
Thailand and Hungry Ghosts
'The hungry ghosts are the most common of our indigenous ghouls, and I’m not entirely surprised to find him in a go-go club, for they feed on every kind of vice. They bring bad luck and the only repellent is a visit to the temple and an expensive exorcism by the monks. Every bar in Thailand has its tales of girls who were contracted to spend a night with a Falang, only to flee into the night because the Falang had chosen an old run-down hotel infested with these filthy spirits, waking to find an apparition greedily lapping at the used condom the Falang had been to lazy to dispose of'. – Bangkok 8, John Burdett.
Hungry Ghosts and the Bhava Chakra
Hungry ghosts occupy the 3rd realm of the Bhava Chakra, otherwise known as the ‘Preta-Gati’. The Bhava Chakra (or ‘Wheel of Life’) is divided into six realms encompassing the different cycles of death and rebirth. As with all things Buddhist the state of being a hungry ghost is temporary, and whilst I have described it above as a punishment, it may also be perceived as being a beneficial learning experience through which the soul is encouraged to learn from previous mistakes, in order to avoid them in future lives, and achieve enlightenment.
The Buddha within the realm of the hungry ghosts distributes the gifts of the Gods from within a bowl, seeking to entice the hungry ghosts into desiring ‘truth’ over physical pleasures, for it is said that only through this desire for the truth can the appetites of the hungry ghosts ever truly be satisfied.

Hungry Ghost Captured in a Malaysian Cemetery?

Is Buddha a God, a Man, or Something Inbetween?

A few weeks back now I received a comment on another article of mine in which I stated that ‘Buddha is Thailand's most beloved Deity’, that went something a little like this: ‘I’d just like to point out to the culturally challenged writer that Buddha is not a God...’, and so on, by a visitor I’d either upset with my more poetic than encyclopedic observation, or by someone who was just seeking an opportunity to be smug, and self righteous.

However, while I knew their comment to be true, in the sense that Buddha is not considered to be a God in the same way as those of other religions, there is some confusion surrounding just exactly what Buddha is.

In my own simplified understanding of the situation I’ll admit to thinking of Buddha, or the Buddhas, as a little like the Jedi Knights of Star Wars fame. As enlightened beings who like the Jedi elevate themselves through their dedication to a chosen path, to become more than just man.
Buddha never claimed to be a God. He lived, he ate, he died. Or at least his physical form did. But that hasn’t prevented him from being revered in the same manner as the omnipotent Deities of monotheistic religions. In Thailand Buddha is everywhere. From the towering statues and monuments found within temples to the small figurines on the dashboards of taxis. Fighting for space with pictures of the King of Thailand, few corners are left untouched from this feast of adoration.
And prayer to the Buddha is as common as to that of other Gods, with Thai people praying for anything from good health and long life, protection, and peace of mind, through to a winning lottery ticket. Making it difficult for the outsider to perceive any real difference between the Buddha, and any other divine being.
Is Buddha a God?
So Buddha is the teacher, the enlightened one, and a soul who never claimed to be anything more than a mere mortal, just like the rest of us. Suggesting that we too over lifetimes of dedication to the search for Nirvana could become a Buddha also. However, could it be that over the years since his passing, through the passion of all those who unquestioningly follow his teachings, that despite any protests the Buddha himself might have made, he has become a God to his people, for all intents and purposes?

Sleep Paralysis, Shadow People and Old Hag Syndrome - 'While You Sleep'

What is Sleep Paralysis?

Sleep paralysis is the term used to describe a state of paralysis that grips the body usually shortly after waking, but occasionally before falling asleep. Scientifically it is thought to be a part of the natural sleep cycle known as 'REM' (rapid eye movement). The human body excretes hormones into the blood-stream whilst sleeping in order to limit locomotion, i.e. to stop you getting up and wandering around in the night (a lack of this hormone is thought to be the cause of sleep walking, etc.). Sleep paralysis is thought to occur when the brain awakes but the body is still under the influence of these enzymes. These episodes are often accompanied by nightmarish hallucinations, and a heightened sense of helplessness and fear.
This condition of sleep paralysis is well documented and is often connected with the paranormal, in Vietnam it is known as 'Ma De - held down by a ghost', in China it is known as 'Pinyin - body pressured by a ghost', in Iceland it is known as 'Mara - Devil sitting on your chest trying to suffocate you', and so on, around the globe this condition is believed by many to be associated with some form of ghostly/demonic attack upon the soul. And you never know, scientists have been known to be wrong before...
Old Hag Syndrome - Sleep Paralysis
Old Hag Syndrome - Sleep Paralysis
While you sleep
“The good news is”, said the doctor, “is that your are neither crazy, nor are you possessed”, which is the kind of good news that one is always happy to receive, “it’s all very simple” the doctor continued, “although I do understand your concern, but it’s all very natural you see, a slight distortion of the natural cycle, often brought about by stress”.
I hadn’t felt particularly stressed, at least, not until after the first incident, “You see, it’s all to do with enzymes and so on, a defence mechanism of sorts” The doctor informed me, “It’s known as ‘sleep paralysis’, essentially the brain releases chemicals which shut down the body, to prevent you from attempting to live out your dreams whilst you sleep, in fact…” he continued, “it’s almost the exact opposite of sleep walking, in which those inflicted don’t produce enough of said enzymes to keep them suitably bed bound whilst resting. “The problem is that your mind is waking, whereas your body is not, essentially leaving you stranded somewhere between the conscious and the subconscious.”
It was good to know that there was a sound scientific explanation, ‘sleep paralysis’ I mused appreciating the solidity of the term, and the complete lack of nonsense it projected, because the first time I’d experienced it, I’d been terrified, and the second and third time; even more so.
Each time I awoke instantly enveloped by an intense feeling of unease, a strong sense of not being alone in the darkness that sent shivers pulsating through me, a primal instinct triggered within me that would have sent me fleeing like prey from predator, shook me, but was unable to preserve me, because I was completely unable to move.
I wanted nothing more then to run for the light switch like a child scared of the dark, I could feel something without eyes watching me, and then worse still, I could feel something without hands touching me, sitting astride me, pinning me down. My body failed me whilst my eyes and mind did not, I found my self staring into an emptiness that had taken on being, and could feel the face it didn’t have mere inches from mine, mocking me, as it pinned me down tight to the bed.
Like a man with no other salvation to call upon, I began to pray to myself frantically, not with lips, but inside of my head, and I’d never considered my self a religious man, until now, as I begged for God to save me from this terrible nightmare.
And then it was over, my body rejoined me, and I ran for the light, and whether I was saved by divine intervention, or merely awoke from a terrible dream I would find it difficult to say, but the first time wasn’t the last time, and after several more episodes such as these, I no longer slept in the dark.
And the light keeps me safe, it really does, and I laugh along with those I tell, a grown man scared of the dark, they laugh, and I laugh, because I’d rather laugh and be laughed at; then face that terror again.
‘The old hag’ some call it, and it’s known the world around, in Vietnam it’s called ‘Ma De’ meaning ‘held down by a ghost’, and in Iceland it is known as ‘Mara’ meaning ‘Devil on your chest’, and it’s as old as time itself. And if you’ve ever listened to anybody recall their experience, from little girl to hulking great giant of a man, the one thing they will always have in common, is the fear, still in their eyes as they tell their story.
But science is infallible, and if the good doctor tells me that there is nothing to worry about more than perhaps the need to get a little more exercise, and eat more fruit and veg, to drink less alcohol, and smoke less cigarettes, and above all to try and get a good nights rest, then it seemed reasonable enough to believe him, “Enzymes” I said to myself as I turned off the light and climbed into bed, “Who’d have believed it”.
****************************************************************************************************
I tried to scream, but I couldn’t, I tried to run, but I couldn’t, ‘its only enzymes… it’s only enzymes…’ I repeated over and over inside my head, but whatever it was sat astride me; it didn’t believe me. Absolute terror flooded through me, I was helpless to fight it, pinned beneath something I could only sense and couldn’t see, and then I heard it clearly, and wished that I hadn’t, “the good news is…” it said “is that you’re not going crazy”, “the bad news is….”,
‘Help me God, help me God, help me God, help me God...’
“The bad news is…” it told me, “is that we come for you whilst you sleep”.

"Evil Kids" Movies - Psycho Killer Children on Film

As a child of about nine, I made the mistake of drawing at school, a shop full of swords and knives. A picture that other parents may have took as nothing more than the kind of interest that many young boys display in the weapons sported by the cowboys, soldiers, and samurai, that were the staple of comic books of the time. However, not my mother. Because from that day onwards. I could see in her eyes. Like the gruesome pictures often drawn by the children in the movies that follow, that my innocent (or so I’d thought) picture, was a sign, of the impending psychotic killing sprees that would sooner-or-later follow at my hands.
Evil Kids in the Movies

And while, to date, I have so far resisted the urge to bash the brains in of family pets, or to set the family home on fire, killing all inside. The children at the center of these ‘Evil Kid’ movies, show no such restraint. Twisting the minds of those who would attempt to love these depraved little brutes, before, with instruments blunt, and/or sharp. They prove that while blood may indeed be thicker than water, both, are just as easily spilt.

Joshua
‘Eccentric’, is probably the kindest way of describing Joshua, the nine year old son of the Cairns family. Talented and intelligent beyond his years, Joshua, grows increasingly jealous following the birth of his baby sister. And as his jealousy grows, so does the level of terror that Joshua inflicts upon those that surround him. Disturbingly calculating, Joshua, is a perfect example of the kind of psycho killer child my own mother half expected me to grow up to be. If you haven’t already seen it, and you’re a fan of the evil kid genre, Joshua is a must!

Orphan

Adopting an orphan can be a rewarding, and life-changing experience. Although, as demonstrated in the movie ‘Orphan’, it could also ultimately turn out to be, a life-ending one, as Kate, and John Coleman find out soon after adopting Esther. This quirky nine year old Russian girl, with a penchant for the macabre, and brutal, tears the Coleman family apart with aplomb. Before finally giving up her dark secret...

The Good Son

While (and this is a matter of opinion) I seem to have turned out ‘alright’ in the end, the concerns of some mothers regarding their offspring seem to be justified. And that’s certainly the case with Henry. Played by ‘Macaulay Culkin’, it soon becomes clear that Henry is one sandwich short of a picnic, displaying deeply disturbing psychotic tendencies, that quite frankly, make him one child that you wouldn’t want to be left 'home alone' with...

The Bad Seed

Believed to be the first of the genre, made way back in 1956. ‘The Bad Seed’, tells the story of Rhoda Penmark, the cute as a button in pigtails, and old fashioned dresses preteen killer. Who while at first glance is as innocent as can be, promising to “swap a basketful of hugs, for a basketful of kisses”, is the archetype deranged little darling. And a venom-laced lolita. In this most classic of the ‘evil kids’ movie genre.
Halloween
While not ‘pure’, as a ‘killer kid’ movie, with the later half of the movie focusing on Michael’s later years. ‘Halloween’, the 2007 ‘Rob Zombie’ remake, definitely deserves an honorable mention. Because while the earlier Halloween movies (for me at least) were better placed alongside the likes of more ‘paranormal’ movies of the time, like those starring ‘Freddy Krueger’, and ‘Jason Vorohees’, Rob Zombies version offers a raw glimpse into the life of a crazed young boy, on the verge of becoming one of horror cinemas most infamous villains.

Home Movie

And finally, if you’re a fan of ‘Blair Witch’ style found-footage horrors, you’ll love Home Movie. Because if there’s anything worse than having one ungrateful little shit trying to knife you in the back every time you drop your guard, it’s having two of them. ‘Emily’, and ‘Jack’, are ten year old twins, and the children of Pastor, David. And Psychologist, Clare. And while the Poes family appear to be ‘picture perfect’ to outsiders, Emily, and Jack, become increasingly unhinged, as this indie point-of-view movie unfolds. In a manner that will leave every parent with just a little doubt in their mind, unable to sleep in the dark, listening to the creaking of floorboards, with one eye open...
