Haunted Dolls - Robert the Doll and Friends (Possessed Dolls)

Most of us as children would have had a favourite cuddly toy or doll, a daylight play-friend and a nocturnal protector, a secret confidant by light and a guard against the monsters lurking in the closet by night.  We were the lucky ones.
For others it seems that the special friend treasured by most of us becomes that feared threat posed by night and a predator in the dark.  Seemingly animated when the lights go out they move around of their own free will always appearing elsewhere from the place they were left before you finally fell asleep.  What can be more terrifying than an inanimate object taking on a life of its own?

Haunted Dolls:
Dolls especially are frequently (if you believe the stories) connected with the spirit world and tales of haunted dolls are common. Some believe that dolls being a physical representation of a human being make them the perfect receptacle for a disembodied spirit, especially to the spirit of one to which the doll once belonged.
Robert the Doll:
Probably the most notorious haunted doll is the haunted doll known simply as ‘Robert’, Robert the doll was the life-long companion of the famous painter ‘Robert Eugene’. As a young child Robert Eugene was inseparable from his favourite doll and was rarely seen without it, the young Robert Eugene was often heard conversing with his doll, and whilst doing so could be heard to respond in a voice entirely different to his own.
Throughout Robert Eugene’s childhood Robert the doll remained by his side and both were repeatedly at the centre of strange occurrences. When things became broken or stolen if confronted by his parents or others Robert Eugene would simply reply ‘Robert did it!’
Things became stranger still when late at night footsteps could be heard running around the house, but the source of the footsteps could never be found, and strange and unusual singing could be heard coming from within the young Robert Eugene’s nursery. Although at first unbelieving in the possibility that Robert the doll could be haunted over time the entire family witnessed many strange and unexplainable phenomenon that resulted in the entire household living in fear of Robert the doll.
As a fully grown man Robert Eugene still refused to sever the bond with his much beloved doll, and even when married the haunted doll remained close by his side. The strange occurrences surrounding the haunted doll still continued with Robert the doll still seemingly acting of its own free will.
Robert Eugene’s wife and servants all claimed to have seen the haunted doll darting between rooms and corridors and finally his wife forced Robert Eugene to relegate the haunted Robert the doll to the attic above. But once again footsteps could be heard roaming the attic and finally Robert the doll refused to remain there. When the haunted doll was found free from the attic and confronted by his wife Robert Eugene would simply reply ‘Robert did it!’
With time Robert Eugene and his family passed away, but of course Robert the doll did not. Eventually a new family moved into the house formerly owned by Robert Eugene and discovered Robert the doll stored in the attic. The new family mistakenly gave the haunted doll to their young daughter, and once again the dolls strange activities began. The new owners of Robert the doll told friends of witnessing many unnerving incidents at the hands of the doll, and the young daughter to whom he had be given would suffer from terrible nightmares after receiving Robert and claimed that on several occasions she had awoke to find the haunted doll attempting to suffocate her.
Robert the haunted doll currently resides at the ‘EastMartelloMuseum’ in Florida, and is still said to be up to his old tricks. Staff at the museum tell tales of having been followed by Robert the doll whilst visitors are often left troubled by the dolls changing expression after developing photographs.
